My approach to team development is distinctive from traditional approaches. I view the team as a finely integrated unit that has a personality apart from just a composite of individuals. That is why my strategy with team leaders to develop their teams uses a three-pronged approach:

1. Understand the individual within the Team. What traits do they bring to the team?

  • Colleagial
  • Dysfunction
  • Balanced
  • Self-Defeating behaviors
  • Organized
  • Self-directed

2. The Team Profile is the composite of the individuals that produces a separate persona. Understand the disparate parts and the team leader has an advantage for enhancing the inner strengths, risk tolerance, and stamina of each member.

3. Leadership of the Team—How does the leader function inside the team is critical. Often leaders remain outside the synergy of the unit and may miss integral revelations only the team can expose.
